Internet v.s. The Web

The internet was invented by two men by the names of Robert E. Kahn and Vint Cerf on January 1, 1983. The internet is defined by Merriam-Webster as “a system that connects computer throughout the world. The original computer system was known as ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network). This was done by a process called packet switching which allowed multiple computers to communicate on a single network.

The web is defined by Merriam-Webster as “the part of the internet that can be looked at with a special program (called a browser)”.  The web was created by a British scientist by the name of Tim Berners-Lee. It was developed for the purpose of information sharing between scientists and various other institutions around the world. Today, the web is used for nearly anything you can think of including shopping, advertising, businesses, buy and selling stocks, socializing through social media platforms, and many others.

The web and the internet are intertwined but are not the same at the end of the day. The internet is the overall computer system that connects many different things that can be done on the computer. The web however, is a specified browser that is used to search information and this is where all of our current day social media platforms and information is found.

The first website was created on August 6, 1991 as web creator Tim Berners-Lee published his first ever website which was an overview of how to use the web. http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html
